Half hourly meters are electricity meters that send details of the consumption and energy used directly to the electricity supplier every half hour.
Half hourly meters are for intended for large businesses that use a lot of electricity. If a business goes over a power usage of 100 kW in any half hour period then it is mandatory that the supplier installs a half hourly meter on their premises.
A half hourly meter gives the electricity supplier a more accurate view of the electricity being used, which they can use to tailor bespoke electricity deals and tariffs for these larger businesses.
Kilowatt hours (kWh) is a unit used to measure how much energy is used. To give some idea of size, one kWh would power a 100-watt lightbulb for 10 hours.
Energy companies use kWh to understand how much electricity or gas your business uses (otherwise known as ‘consumption’)
Cost per kWh is a good way to compare electricity or gas quotes and tariffs as it’ll enable you to do a side by side comparison of rates to easily determine which is cheapest. If you’re currently in an an energy deal with a supplier for your business, then the timing of any switch to a new supplier will depend on the end date of your existing electricity or gas deal.
